“I feel that the shape of the tree has been lost in the timber generic where the utilitarian appeal of timber has been over emphasised at the expense of the expression of the tree. It seems that the wood is considered more important than the original living form.”

Michael Robert Greve

Michael Robert Greve

Meet Michael Greve, an eccentric sculptor with an insatiable passion for working with wood.

Extending beyond traditional sculpting techniques, Michael seeks out new and unconventional ways to examine the material. From intricate carvings to bold designs, he embraces experimentation, pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved with timber as his medium.

While Michael's work is diverse, nature serves as his greatest muse. Each sculpture pays homage to the inherent beauty of wood, highlighting its unique characteristics and the stories it carries.

His sculptures invite viewers to touch, feel, and experience the tactile nature of timber, creating a sensory connection that resonates at a non-intellectual level ( feeling sense).

With his unwavering passion, daring experimentation, Michael continues to redefine the possibilities of his craft. His creations not only capture the imagination but also serve as a testament to the boundless creativity that arises when an artist explores new horizons.

Born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, he studied at RMIT Sculpture Department in the early days, becoming more and more independent from the opinions of others in later life and determined to view his works, and his creations, his way.

Australia is blessed with a unique environment of air, land, water and space. Michael loves his country; his work shows us this love as well as the respect he holds for what it gives to him.
